Re: Saving vs Converting to FLAC

The "High," "Maximum," etc. refer to compression levels... FLAC offers quite a few compression levels (8, I think) that determine how much the digtial data is compressed. More compression saves space, but takes more time; Less uses more space but goes faster. In any case, FLAC is...

I like this idea. Like you, I've seen it elsewhere, and it can be very helpful.

Not sure what the problem might be, but take a look at this:

It sounds like the same thing.

Re: Music Quality CD-RW

Item #1 is no problem... any CD-RW discs will do, though I've had poor results with "Ultra Speed" discs, for both audio and data. The "High Speed" discs work fine. Your problem is item #2... Only audio players specifically designed to do so will play RW discs. If yours isn't, the...

I've seen this happen from time to time also, but not consistently. I've never been able to pin down one exact sequence of actions that will cause it to happen every time.

Re: Recording Mono LP Records

I agree; recording in stereo gives you more options. You can then use GW to create your mono file. You'll usually mix the two channels together equally. This will give you a sizeable reduction in noise, especially at low frequencies. To do this, go to Effects -> stereo -> channel mixer and choose th...

Re: Recording problem - Line-in is disabled

This has been discussed here many times... some inputs may not appear by default. To check, go to Control panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Manage audio devices, and click on the "recording" tab. If the input you want to use is missing, right-click on an empty part of the tab, and choose &quo...

Re: i can't record from my cassette deck for some reason

If the tape deck is connected to the receiver's tape input, and your sound card is connected to the corresponding tape output on the reciever, what you are experiencing is normal -- the tape in/out conections are both designed to be connected to the same tape deck, and reciever won't send the tape d...

Multiple composers lost when re-saving

I'm surprised I didn't notice this until recently...

Using GoldWave v5.55, flac format. Load a file which lists multiple composers in the metadata, then re-save the file with GoldWave. Check the metadata -- only the last composer remains.

Re: Recording 78 rpm records at 33 or 45 rpm

Sounds like you've developed a pretty good system! One problem though is you're not really getting the equalization right this way. I assume that your phono preamp is applying eq (if not, you can ignore all of this!), but it's doing so to the slowed-down record. This means that all the frequencies h...

Re: compare an effect preview with the original sound

By golly you're right! Thanks, Jack! You are welcome. I think I found this out by mistake, when I used the regular button out of habit, and noticed it sounded different! The only problem with this is it starts playing back at the beginning of the selection, which can make it tough to compare proces...

The regular play button lets you hear the original sound. I'm not sure if there's a way with the keyboard however.

Re: Non-Destructive MP3 Trimming/Saving

Your idea isn't a bad one, though I have no idea how difficult it would be to implement.

Since you mention flac... remember, it is lossless, so you can re-encode without any loss in quality, unlike mp3.

Re: v5.54 and metadata

Version 5.55 is a big improvement. It maintains most metadata, including during format conversion. Nicely done, though I still wish the disc# was preserved. Here's something that might be possible... I understand that format conversion is tricky, since different formats have different metadata infor...
