My WMP version is 7.01.lotsofnumbers ... in case that's relevent. Maybe the new WMAFile.dll requires the latest version?

I installed 5.07 and I can no longer save as wma. Do I have to reinstall window media player to update some codecs or something? I can see the WMAfile.dll in the Golwave files folder. It doesn't show up, though, in the Options-File formats-Precendence list...

You'll need to install Windows Media Player 9. The new WMA plug-in in GoldWave no longer works with WMP 8 or earlier.
