Part of the troubleshooting listing is missing.

Some audio devices do not have a physical connection between the speaker output and the recording input, so it is not possible to record what you are hearing. The only solution is to use a short stereo cable to connect the output to the input, as shown here.

For that Realtek card, you need to change the recording device rather than selecting the input on the Volume tab. For example, to record Line In, you'd select the "Line In" recording device on the Device tab, then select the same volume device on the Volume tab to adjust the master volume level.

That is above my head.

I made many good recordings from internet radio with my old XP computer and Goldwave. I think I am going to give it a rest. Thanks for your help.

I don't think your new computer has an audio connection between the speaker output and the recording hardware. A program (virtual sound driver) like Total Recorder might work.

Total recorder

Are you suggesting using Total recorder to get Goldwave working?

Total Record replaces your sound driver with a virtual driver so that anything you play can be saved to your hard drive. There are still some limitations (I don't think it works with Windows Media Player), but it might be worth a try.

Using an external cable to connect the headphone output to the line input would be the only other solution.

Sound Forge 9

Sony sent me an offer on Sound Forge the other day, I have the same problem with it. I am sure you diagnosis is right on the sound card. I think the cable might be the way to go.

Chris
I might have the same problem.
I've got a SoundMax Integrated Digital HD Audio card.
I'd like to determine if my SoundMax card limits itself the same way, but I don't have the mini-plugs to connect speaker-out and line-in, in order to test it.
Does anyone know of a specific name for this situation, that I could use a keyword to try to find out more about it through SoundMax? I never can guess what these things are called, so I could fumble around for weeks, with a browser, trying to guess the magic word...
SoundMax must have online specs about its cards, and I want to know what to ask about, to determine if I need that cord to connect line-out and line-in, at the back of the computer.

Greg,

I think you have a different problem. This post has to do with recording "What You Hear" or "Stereo Mix" (recording the sound that's going to the PC's speakers). But, your other post shows that you had selected Line-In.

If you are trying to record "What You Hear", the keywords would be "recording streaming audio", or "recording internet audio" because this option is most-often used for that purpose. And, there is some information on this in the GoldWave FAQ.

But if you are trying to record from line-in, I think you may have a driver problem, and you may have to wait for help from Chris (GoldWave). Or, you may want to to contact GoldWave directly via the Web Support Form. I don't know what's going on.... As long as the drivers are correct for the hardware and for the Windows version you are using, GoldWave should work with any soundcard. (Just as your printer works with any printing application.)

Hi Doug

Primarily I'm concerned with recording any sound at all, either within the system, or externally. I can't record from an MP3 playing within the system, or from the CD player, either. No matter the setting, Goldwave's troubleshooter says, "Recording inputs for this device cannot be opened."
Thanks for the leads, this is confusing, and I wasn't aware of the special Web Support Form.
