Save Left Channel as Mono File

Post by pmokover »

I have a stereo WAV file. I want to save the left channel only as a mono file. What's the best way to do that?

Thanks.

I'm not sure this is the "best" way, but it should work...

Create a new mono file (I think the blank/silent file can be shorter than your sound file).

In your stereo file, Edit -> Channel -> Left, then Copy.

In the new blank file, Edit -> Overwrite. Then save. (If you choose Paste it will push-over the existing silent data, and you might have to trim the silence off the end of the file.)

P.S.
Maybe this is easier... Just make sure to make a back-up or don't forget to change the filename when you save-as mono.

In your stereo file, Edit -> Channel -> Left, then Copy.
Edit -> Channel -> Right, then Overwrite. (Both channels now contain the same "left channel" sound.)
Save-As mono.

You can also use

Effect > Stereo > Channel Mixer...

and use the "Mono left" preset, then save the file as mono via

File > Save As...

You'd use Edit | Channel to select the left channel and File | Save Selection As to save just that channel.
