Control Properites - Recording Volume question

Post by opuntia »

I have a question about the Volume tab in the Control Properties window. When setting the volume level for a recording, what exactly does the number stand for? For example, if I set it to 50, does that mean it’s 50% louder than the source? I’m recording an internet audio stream (quicktime) and I have the Wave Out Mix selected, however, I’m debating what to set the volume level to. Under the window properties, I have the volume set to max.

Thanks

It depends on the sound card, the type of input, the master control setting (if enabled), and other factors. It could be a linear scale or logarithmic one. For some digital inputs, the value is ignored completely. A zero value usually gives no signal. A 100 value usually gives the maximum signal (if the master control is at maximum as well). However, there is no way to know absolutely what signal level you are recording except through empirical means (the VU meters and visuals).
