Please Help w/old iPAQ audio files convertion

Hi,
I have old voice recording files saved on my computer from an old iPAQ I used to have. These files are interviews of people and chronicle the beginnings of a non-profit zoological organization I belong to. The organization is coming up on its 10 anniversary and I wanted to put together a presentation with the audio from these files. Unfortunately they are in a strange .msg format and I am hoping that Goldwave can be my hero and convert them to mp3. I had an IT guy give me the following advice but it doesn’t work:

Here's how to do it:
Use your installed GoldWave on your PC, follow these steps:
Make a copy of the .msg file you have.
Rename the .msg copy you just made to .wav.
Load the file into Gold Wave.
Set the file read/playback as: 11,025 hz, 8 bit, mono.
Cut the header information off of the file. For example, you may need to cut off the first 12.5 seconds.
Play back your file to validate that it works.
Save the file to a usable format (.wav, .mp3, etc.).
Note that .mp3 files take up less space and have better sound quality than .wav files.

Can anyone provide me with some suggestions to this dilemma?

Hi,
Thanks for getting back so quickly. There is defiantly a type of header and then unreadable data structure but not as clearly defined as your example. I do not have the iPAQ or I would simple play the audio from the unit and capture it. Are you suggestion I could chop the header in notepad and then try something else? I was hoping someone out there has dealt with this before at Goldwave but, such is technology… it got hit & run over by new stuff! Here is the top portion of one of the files:

I was going to install Python and become a first time user but, I ran into the news about the hacking in December.

Has the hole been plugged?

Is it safe to download and install: {python-2.7.3.msi} ?

I do not want to compromise our computer system.
