I am very new to recording. My volume levels when recording from a cassette player plugged into the microphone jack of my computer are way too high. I have tried changing the volume in the volume control panel of GoldWave (stays too high even when set to zero), volume on the interface (seems to control playback volume), the volume control on the cassette player, and the output volume control on the computer. I have gone to my control panel (I have XP) to sounds and audio. There seem to be no controls for recording.
Any ideas?

Re: Volume levels too high
A line or headphone output should not be connected directly to a microphone input unless you use an adapter. Otherwise it could damage the sound card or external device. Try connecting to the computer's line input instead, if one is available. If not, you'll need a line-to-microphone adapter or a USB recording device with a line input.
