I think I just use the keyboard arrow buttons to move the playback cursor backwards and forwards.

I don't want to read the manual either, but, then, it isn't my problem, is it?

First make sure the "View | Auto Scroll Lock" is checked. Now when you play a file, you can use the left and right arrow keys to skip through the file. Zoom in or out to control how much time is skipped (Shift+Up/Down).
Also check into the "Marker preview" setting (press F11).
