hi,

here another second reason why i'm stil keep my old golwave 5.70 : i can open some "strange" mp3 file that x64 g6.6 cannot manage to open !
here is an example : https://gofile.io/?c=85oQYK

i use win7 x64, i hope you can tell me why ?

Best regards

ps : the first reason is that g5.70 x32 manage to open mkv file with ac3/dts track whereas g6.36 can't open...

I'm not getting anything except something going-around in circles like it's downloading, for a looooong time.

Maybe it's not really an MP3. You can check the file-format details with MediaInfo or MediaInfo Online if you don't want to install it on your computer.

You can also check (and sometimes repair) MP3s with MP3 Diags.

Or, the MP3 might have invalid tags/metadata. I've had files with extra-large embedded album artwork files and they wouldn't play. (I didn't try opening those in GoldWave because they failed right-after adding the artwork and I knew what the problem was.) And, I've heard of FLAC files that wouldn't open in GoldWave because of invalid metadata.

The "difference" might be in the 32-bit & 64-bit CODECs. I assume GoldWave is using the Microsoft-supplied MP3 decoder. (As you know, it uses LAME for encoding.)
ps : the first reason is that g5.70 x32 manage to open mkv file with ac3/dts track whereas g6.36 can't open...
GoldWave doesn't support either of those natively so that's 3rd-party CODECs. And again, I assume the difference is 32-bit or 64-bit CODECs.

...If I have a "difficult" format I'll use Audacity with the FFMPEG import/export library or I'll convert or extract the audio with XMedia Recode.

thank you for the tips to check the media.
the audio (listen) was ok so i did not check it.

media info says that : (no problem i guess, so why g x64 can't open it ?)
MediaInfo report of "bide_et_musique_emission_intégrale.mp3" :

I can download it just fine. I ONLY use version 5.70 of GoldWave, and it loads in that version just fine also. It also plays in my favorite music player - WinAmp 5.8. I was also able to edit the file - add a graphic to the file - which also shows up in WinAmp.

It was a large file to download - being just over 14-1/2 MB. Saving it in GoldWave trimmed about 100,000 bytes off the size of the file ?!?!?! - - Interesting.

I am definitely not an audio freak - way back in the 60's, I was in a rock band and am now am over 50% deaf because of that. So, I don't need any of the additional bells and whistles that the latest version of GoldWave provides. In other words, "I don't 'fix' things that aren't broken".

The good news is, I got the file. Apparently, GoFile doesn't like Internet Explorer. Google Chrome worked.

The "bad news" is, the file opened fine with GoldWave 6.41 running on Windows 10.

-----------------------------------------------------------
MP3 Diags found a couple of potential problems:
Frame count mismatch between the Xing header and the audio stream. (Probably not a big problem.)

Two MPEG audio streams found, but a file should have exactly one.

Unknown stream found. Since other streams follow, it is possible that players and tools will have problems using the file. Removing the stream is recommended.

I backed-up the file and applied "Fix #3" in MP3 Diags. The resulting file has the same exact playing time but it's a little smaller and something is "different" in the 1st two minutes.

-----------------------------------------------------------
I didn't listen (because I'm at work) but I subtracted the two files*. The difference-file has "nice looking" waveforms for the 1st two minutes, then it goes flat indicating no difference.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Everything looks good in MediaInfo and the file size is just about right for a 7.5 minute 256kbps file. MP3Tag shows no metadata (which agrees with MP3 Diags) so there's no invalid metadata.

* Invert one file and mix.

thank you for the diags, but the question remains :

why x32 can open the file whereas the x64 release (me on win7) can't ?
does the x32 use a local plugin that the x64 doesn't (like embeded in gd) ?

Using winamp , the file is listenable fine (i test it fully).

Where did i get that kind of file :

Often , i fall on a webradio or podcast with a player. When i want to "get" this music/sound/track, i listened to it using internet explorer (whatever the operating system) . Internet explorer produces a "cache file" (in temp folder or somewhere elase...) which is always extensionned with ".dat".
A day, i noticied if i renamed it with "mp3", then i can listen to it ! so, that how i got this mp3 file since....windows XP ...to now win7... i didn't try on windows 10 yet. but since year, it works for both 32bits and 64bits sytems and on ly with internet explorer.

so it is a "mp3 stream" kind ?

i install the last 6.41 x64 on my win7 x64.
same problem, gw x64 can't whereas x32 can well.
The "bad news" is, the file opened fine with GoldWave 6.41 running on Windows 10.
it seems gw x64 use a different codec from win7 and win10 ......

here what i got with gw 6.41 x64 :

here what i manage to have with gw 5.70 x32 (same windows win7 as the 6.41) :

very strange...

by GoldWave Inc.
The file contains over 65000 zeros before the MP3 data. That may cause problems with some versions of the MP3 decoder.

Try using Options | Plug-ins | File | GoldWave* to use the ACM MP3 decoder.
