I was told it was possible to seperate the vocal from the backround track, and leave each as an individual. My skills at any form of computing are limited so a simplified and very dumbed down explanation of how to do it would be much appreciated

You can delete (cancel out) the vocals from music in some songs by using the Effect | Stereo | Reduce Vocals command in GoldWave. I do not know of any way to separate and keep both the music and vocals.
