Removing Sounds

Post by dlowrey »

I would like to rip a song from a video game.

The problem is that the characters in the game make sounds while the music is playing.

I can get a recording of the sounds they make while nothing else is playing.

Is it possible to have GoldWave take that sample and "subtract" it when it occurs during the music recording?

If not, is there a product that does?

Thanks!

It is possible to substract the sounds if you can synchronize with a one sample precision and exactly the same volume, it might be rather fastidious to try over and over until it is exactly what you need. You will have the same problem with any audio editor.

How to subtract:

In order to subtract, you have to invert the phase of one sound and then mix it with the other.

Effect->Invert
Edit->Mix

Mixing is the mathematical addition of sounds. So, you are performing subtraction by "adding a negative".

In order for this to work, the signals must have the same amplitude (volume level) and be exactly aligned in-time (If you are off by a few milliseconds, it won't work.)

A couple of people tried this before... click here and here.

Thanks for the tips.

The amplitude of the two should be exactly the same, so that shouldnt be a problem.

Any tips on aligning them, or is it just trial & error?

The best tip for aligning them is zooming in on your sound waves. Compare the sound waves of the two files until you see a similarity.
