bug or too huge config or bad config for openning APE?

Post by Michael REMY »

hi !

i tried to open a APE file (542 341 060 bytes). my hardware is 6GB of memory and core i7-975.
Goldwave told me "no enough memory is evailable for processing" and i have only 1.7GB used by other software.

so, bug ? problem or else ?
i use win7 x64 with goldwave 5.55.

thanks for help.

I don't believe GoldWave works with APE files...
GoldWave wrote: Supports iTunes Plus, m4a, wav, wma, mp3, ogg, aiff, au, vox, FLAC, and even raw binary data.
You might have to convert the file to WAV with a 3rd party conversion program if you want to edit with GoldWave.

And, I doubt this is really a memory problem... Windows uses the hard drive for virtual memory. But there is an option for GoldWave to use RAM, and that can sometimes an issue, because GoldWave will expand the file to 32-bits uncompressed PCM (twice the size of a 16-bit WAV file) for internal processing.

well,

i just converted it to mp3 (and sounded ok), now it uses 114 167 430 bytes on harddrive
Payload Size: 114166804 bytes
Header found at: 626 bytes
Enc Delay: 576, Zero Padding: 756
Length: 4756 seconds
MPEG-1 layer 3
192 kbps, 182102 frames
44100 Hz Joint Stereo

CRC: No, Copyrighted: No
Original: Yes, Emphasis: None
but goldwave still say the same error message !
the lenght is 79 min 15s, maybe it is the problem ?

i will install the last release, maybe it will solve the thing...

well, last release installed and the problem persists.....

i did this tests :
- i created a 1h20min wav file with goldwave, no problem. i can also re-open it after save and close it.

- i converted it in mp3 and now, i can't re-open it in goldwave....

so, i have more than 5GB of free memory, my audio file in wav occupes 1/5 of the free memory in wav and the mp3 one is 10times lighter than the wav....

how many memory i need to open it in a compressed format ?

GoldWave is still a 32 bit program, so memory usage is limited by Windows to about 2GB of RAM, regardless of how much you have installed. When editing such large files, always turn off RAM storage (under "Options | Storage"). The size of the file you are working with will require more than 2GB of storage when decoded.

GoldWave doesn't have to decode Wave files, so no temporary storage is needed when you open them.
