Batch change playback speed

Post by InyoRanger »

I would like to increase the playback speed of many of my audio books by 25%-50% Is there a way to do this in batch mode?

All you have to do is open the batch processor to find out. Scroll down the list of options.
I don't want to read the manual either, but it isn't my problem, is it?

Of course I have done exactly what you suggest. If a change playback speed option is there I do not see it.

I think that answers your question, then.

This would work:

1. Load a sound file that can be used to create a "Time" preset.
2. Choose: Effect/Time
In the "Time" settings panel...
3. Under "Specify new relative change or length" choose "Change (%)".
4. Change the setting to the speed you would like. ie. 125 to produce a playback that is 25% faster.
5. Under "Algorithm" choose "Similarity" to keep the pitch unchanged.
6. Under "Presets" type "125% Similarity" in the Preset name area.
7. Click the "Green Plus" button to save the preset.

You will now have a new preset that can be used under "Batch Processing".

Have you tried this yourself, or are you just assuming it would work? The instructions inside the module say the time change is only effective for voice or simple sounds. It might work with audiobooks, depending on the complexity of the content, but I'd run a few tests on individual files first before committing myself, especially in case any files included music.

I have worked extensively with "Time" editing over many years using spoken audio as well as music files. The "Rate", "Similarity", and "FFT" settings produce a wide range of output quality. Much of my work over the past couple of decades has been applied to commercial CD production as well as video projects that demanded very accurate sound clip timing. There are, of course, limits to the amount of dilatation that can be applied while retaining acceptable quality. The "Time" tool has been incredibly useful to me over many years. My best guess is that I have likely used the tool many hundreds of times with considerable success.

There simply are not words sufficient to express how amazing it is to be able to work in the digital audio playground after 20+ years spent in the world of magnetic tape, reel to reel machines, and splicing tape. Today's technology makes it possible for amateurs to accomplish in a split second at home what seasoned professionals could only dream of doing in fully equipped studios back in the dark ages. Once again I must take my hat off to Goldwave for providing such a useful tool and at such a reasonable price. Thanks Chris!

File -> Batch Processing

Source - Select files

Process - Add Effect - open GoldWave* - Open Time - select 150% similarity

These steps do what I originally asked about.

And I second what lwk said - GoldWave is a great product.
