I would like to know how to make a vertical format video (9:16) for use on social media without having black bars on the sides.

I figured out a workaround today: I put the finished movie in Canva and cropped off the black bars with that.

You can set the project aspect ratio under Options | Project Settings. Set the "Video aspect ratio" to "0.5625 (9:16)". When melding to video, be sure to set the resolution to the same aspect ratio.
