Try changing the file name extension to M4A which is essentially the same as AAC if not exactly the same.

If that doesn't work try converting the file to WAV with Kabuu Audio Converter or other conversion program. Decompressing to WAV (uncompressed PCM) is similar to what GoldWave does when you open a compressed file except it doesn't automatically make a WAV formatted file.

I can open that file* and I didn't have to rename it, so it probably depends on what CODECs you have installed on your computer. I'm on Windows 10 and using GoldWave 6.57 and I've got several audio/video tools so I'm not sure which one made it work.

I was also able to convert it to WAV with Kabuu Audio Converter and then open that.

When I save there is no AAC option but there is an M4A option.

* I didn't actually listen to the file 'cause I'm at work but I didn't get and error and the waveform looks normal

Hello Michael, this might help you. There is another way which is rather basic. Set Goldwave up to record “Loopback audio” in the “Devices” dropdown box and open a new fileto record to. If you play your aac file in the VLC player, you should be able to record into Goldwave. Make a test recording to get the audio level and sample rate to get it right. I use this method to record audio from an external software defined radio and it works just fine. DougDbug is right about the codecs you have installed, there must be one available somewhere but I do not know which one works for me though. Goldwave 6.57 here will play aac files with no trouble.

hi,

thank you Doug, your advice is good except i provided you a sample, the original is more 3h...i can't afford to run such a long task on my computer and stay in front!

actually, when i open it in goldwave (on my win7 x64), i have this dialog box :

Image

is there a chance i could set it right to open it ? or do i need really the right code on my windows ?

can you tell me which codec file (a DLL one ?) your win10 is using to open it ? it could be great if goldwave could list/point/quote the drivers files use to open a file... maybe i can download/copy/paste from a friend. Win7 x64 and Win10 x64 might not be so different in the background (i think)

i tried to install AACACM19.zip , but it dit not work.

Have a good day

Did you try converting to WAW with Kabuu Audio Converter?

VLC can also convert.
Choose Media -> Convert/Save. At the bottom of that window there is another Convert/Save box and after clicking that another Window will pop-up allowing you to choose the format. There aren't a lot of audio options but I chose Audio-CD to get a WAV file. It took maybe 15 seconds to convert a 1.5 hour MP3. (That's the 1st time I've used VLC as a converter but I know it has that feature.)

Audacity should also be able to open it if you install the optional FFmpeg import/export library.
can you tell me which codec file (a DLL one ?) your win10 is using to open it ?
Sorry, I don't know... For me GoldWave just opens it...

And, GoldWave does normally support M4A (AAC) "out of the box".
...Supports iTunes, m4a, wav, wma, mp3, ogg, aiff, au, vox, FLAC

except i provided you a sample, the original is more 3h..
Did you actually try opening the shorter file? Maybe it's "different".
i can't afford to run such a long task on my computer and stay in front!
You don't have to "sit there" and you'd be done by now! :P

Kabuu Audio Converter converted it in a few sec ! unbelievable free software who can perform that (without installing any other codec).

Thank U again Doug.
